Captain Robert Hamaty

Sad to learn the news of Captain Robert Hamaty’s passing on June 13th. He was 72.

Born in Jamaica, Robert lived in the Cayman Islands for 42 years. Before getting into the rum business, he was a pilot with Jamaica Airways and later Cayman Airways. Robert served as the Jamaican Honorary Consul from 1992 to 2009.

For those who don’t know, Mr. Hamaty was once my boss. I have always admired the entrepreneur, visionary, and family man. During my time at Tortuga Fine Wines & Spirits, Robert always treated me with respect, he was kind and inspiring in everything he did. Mr. Hamaty leaves behind a 35 year legacy with a local success story of Tortuga Rum Cakes, which will no doubt continue.

Sending my condolences to the whole Hamaty family, Carleene, Monique, Basil .. and Tortuga family. Proud to have known such an incredible person. Flying with the angels now.
