Whether you’re a recent grad, in transition or exploring new career options, here are 7 job hunting tips to help with your job search.

1. A Great RESUME

I feel this goes without saying but I will list it here anyway. You cannot apply to a job with a poor resume.

Things to consider before submitting your resume.

  • Is your layout and spacing ok?
  • Have you saved file as a pdf?
  • Is your resume too long?
  • Is your objective short and too the point?
  • Have you clearly identified your strengths, achievements and experience?
  • Is your font professional?
  • Is your file name easy to read? Ie. FirstnameLastname, JobName/I.d.
  • Has a friend proofread your resume?

I think the best piece of advice I can give is to always personalize your resume to the job you are applying for. Make sure to read the job post/description carefully. If you have the skills and requirements listed for the job, ensure they are included in your resume. Remember that not all recruiters can read through hundreds of resumes a day. Most companies are using software with algorithms that will generate only resumes/candidates that “fit” the job requirements for the role. Having key words from the job description in your resume will ensure your resume gets picked up.

2. INDUSTRY Analysis 

Just because you’re in tech or finance does not mean you have to work for an I.T. or Finance company. If you’re passionate about CPG, Marketing, Sports, Hospitality, Health Care, Construction etc. GO SEARCH FOR JOBS WITHIN THAT INDUSTRY. You will wake up in the morning much happier knowing you are apart of something you have a personal connection with. Don’t settle for an industry you hate if you can be apart of an industry you love.

3. RESEARCH Companies

If you are somebody, who wants to be apart of an already BIG and established corporation then start by looking at career pages of organizations you already love. You’d be surprised to learn how many positions within your field are available. Many career pages give you the opportunity to create a profile and upload your resume into their database. You can also select the option of receiving alerts when jobs you want become available.

4. LinkedIn

I can’t say enough great things about LinkedIn. As an early adopter, I was able to identify myself as an HR professional and highlight my unique experience in different industries. Over the years I’ve been able to showcase my growth and expertise in the recruitment industry. I use LinkedIn as a platform to share my business, achievements, insights and more. LinkedIn provides free courses, communities and best of all – JOB POSTINGS! The LinkedIn job page allows you to identify roles and industries you’d be interested in learning about. Ensure you have a quality head shot on your profile and a strong bio. Once your profile is updated, start researching jobs, companies and people. Don’t be shy to reach out to someone who you feel would be a great mentor. What’s been most valuable about LinkedIn has been the friends and mentors I’ve met.

5. Connect with RECRUITERS

Find out which recruiters are working on jobs and industries you love. Reach out to them via email, linkedin or do it old school and give them a call. Recruiters love to hear from prospective candidates. Establish a personal relationship and they will be sure to remember you when a position that fits your experience becomes available.

6. Network, network and NETWORK

I love networking events! These events are usually held at fun and unique venues. Often they will have a panel of key note speakers, engaging talk tracks, great debate followed by a networking session. Use this time to meet new people. Exchange business card with those you build a connection with and follow up with them. It can be a coffee date or a phone call.

Networking does not have to be scary. You can network anywhere as long as you are open to it. You never know when you’re sitting next to your future boss or even business partner. Demonstrate interest in those who catch your attention. Learn from these people and allow them learn from you. Putting yourself out there allows people to get to know you. Its like the saying goes, “It’s not what you know, its who you know.”

7. APPLY

Job hunting is a full time job. Remember to be patient and above all proactive. If you are applying every single day,  you are bound to find a job you love. Remember that finding the “perfect job” takes time but it has to start somewhere. Why not start today?
